Alliance for Democracy, South Sound Chapter

Mission Statement:
THE ALLIANCE is part of a non-partisan Populist movement --- not a political party --- setting forth to end the domination of our economy, our government, our culture, our media and the environment by large corporations and the wealthy elite who run them. WE AIM TO PROMOTE true democracy in our country and help achieve a just society with a sustainable, equitable economy. We work together with other organizations that share these goals. We work locally for reforms that enhance citizen participation and empower average citizens in the political arena. We advocate for truly representative democracy within our republican form of government -- a goal that is unattainable when corporations and the wealthy elite who run them wield direct power over elections, government, and civic society. WE ARE PEOPLE from every walk of life who have listened to each other and united to end corporate rule. We are committed to true democracy, with focus for the voice and will of the people; to social and economic justice for all people; and to the building of alternative democratic, human-sized economic systems. WE PURSUE THESE GOALS with respect for the dignity of all people and, in a nonviolent way, seek linkages with similar groups to form a new people's movement, both in the United States and around the world. WE SEEK FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE to the political power structure. Piecemeal reform isn't enough anymore-- the corporate system will not permit us to win anything fundamental by politics as usual. We see our unique role as seeking the deep and systemic changes we will need to win our independence from corporate rule and replace it with true democracy. We work to establish the conditions that will allow citizens to effectively advocate for a more just and free nation that can yield a higher quality of life for all inhabitants.

What is planned for 2008?

  • We are very engaged with the Olympia-Rafah Mural Project, a people's recognition of the sister city relationship that exists between Rafah, Palestine and Olympia. Through the act of creating a collaborative public mural, we will express our desire for Palestinian self-determination, which is rooted in honoring the common struggles for global justice faced by marginalized people everywhere. By upholding rights for all, we seek to break down barriers to understanding, increase visibility for Palestinian people, encourage imagination, embrace the hope and courage of Rachel Corrie, and bring people together in one voice for change.

A design team of local and visiting artists is creating a vision for the mural from image ideas generated in the community during the past year. An afternoon workshop is scheduled for March 8th at The Olympia Center. Committees are forming for Educational Outreach and Publicity, Fundraising, and to plan events to launch and celebrate the mural. We plan to bring artists from Rafah to participate in the painting and celebration.

  • Peace Works 2008—a major conference in Olympia in October--will focus on Duo-Occupations from Palestine to Iraq. Committees are forming to plan for Program, Logistics, Finances, and Publicity.
  • We continue to partner with the Olympia-Rafah Sister City Project to expand efforts to build connections with people in Rafah and to provide support for grassroots efforts there that assist women, children, and families.
  • With publication of a book of Rachel Corrie's writing, Let Me Stand Alone by W.W. Norton & Co., there are plans for curriculum development around the story of Rachel Corrie, including work with both the book and the play My Name is Rachel Corrie.
  • Tuesday, March 4th, Dr. Alice Rothchild, physician and author, will read from and speak about her book Broken Promises, Broken Dreams, Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience. The event is at the Worthington Conference Center at St. Martin's University, 5300 Pacific Ave SE.
  • Sunday, March 16th, Adrien Niyongabo from Burundi, Dr. Steve Niva, Evergreen faculty, and Jennifer Marlowe, writer and author with experience in both Israel/Palestine and Africa, will speak at a gathering commemorating the fifth anniversary of Rachel Corrie's stand in Gaza. The event will be at The Olympia Ballroom from 3-6 PM.
  • We continue to provide support to students working to bring Iraqi refugees to study in 2008. How can you help?

Green Party of South Puget Sound

Mission Statement:
The Greens promote a new vision of life for Americans. In our vision, the government would be run by We the People, not the corporations; there would be real justice for all; and our public policies would protect the web of life running around our planet. We plan to realize our vision through electing Green candidates, through influencing public policy, and through education, including direct action and even civil disobedience when necessary. Our values are explained in more detail on our website (click on The Ten Key Values of the Green Party). We believe we are the truest political expression of the progressive movement in Thurston County and the surrounding areas.
Recent Highlights:

Electoral Outcomes: The Green Party fielded several candidates for local office in 2007, including Suzanne Nott for Port Commissioner and Meta Hogan for Mayor. No local Green candidates won this year, but several progressives won (George Barner, Rhenda Strub), and the campaigns of our candidates were inspirational for many. Earlier successes included Greens T.J. Johnson and Paul Pickett (Mason County PUD commissioner) . Community Issues: The Green Party has been a key player in many community efforts. As a multi-issue organization, we are usually contributors rather than leaders in these efforts. Our energy has played a vital part in the community’s success. The Port: Green Party members have tirelessly insisted on open reporting of Port decisions, on compliance with environmental regulations, and on fiscal accountability. Port Militarization Resistance: The Green Party supports resistance to the use of our port by the military for shipment of weapons. Grassroots democracy implies that we can say No to the illegal actions of our government. Many members took part. As a party, we conducted a fund-raiser to raise money to help pay resisters’ legal costs. Climate Change Action: The Green Party acknowledges the danger of global warming, and works to halt it. We were key players in the StepItUp events in Olympia in April and November; Green Party member Chris Stegman organized the April event. Land Use Planning: Green Party member Suzanne Nott helped organize the opposition to Initiative 933 which would have made the current land use plan inoperative. Many members worked on this issue. Election Reform: The Green Party promotes Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) and other solutions to the disempowerment of citizens under the two-party system. Such reforms encounter powerful opposition from the major parties but have won some success: local governments may now choose IRV for their elections, and Pierce County has made the decision to use it for county elections.

Upcoming News:

Our Quarterly Meeting for the first quarter of the year will be January 12 at the MXX96-FM Meeting Room (Washington and State Streets in downtown Olympia), from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. We will hear an overview of possible legislation for 2008 by Senator Fraser, then break out into groups to consider legislation in four areas: Climate Change, Land Use Planning, Impeachment/End the War Efforts, and Public Funding for Campaigns. The meeting will end with tips by Sandra Romero on how to get a bill passed. Our monthly TV forum, the Green Issues Forum, is aired twice a week in the month after it is taped. Each forum highlights a different aspect of the Green ideal. November’s topic was alternative health care, its successes and legal difficulties; December was Black Box Voting and electoral integrity in our Thurston County; and in January we will examine IRV, Proportional Representation, and other solutions to the dilemma of voters who can’t find their own positions among the choices they see at the ballot box.
